Stand Down

Stand down began at 8:00 a.m. at the Hamblen County Courthouse located at 511 West 2nd North Street Morristown, TN. 37813.

Stand down was an all day event, with volunteers standing in between the two current War Memorial Monuments taking up donations, and representing where the new War Memorial Monument will be erected in honor of Desert Shield/Storm, and Global war on Terrorism for Afghanistan and Iraq.

Also on display at the court house lawn (weather permitting) will be some of our 190Th Engineer Companies Equipment, other military vehicles, Morristown Car Club Cars and Trucks, information tents, and much more to help honor Veteran's.

AT 11:00 there will be a 21 gun salute and a special presentation presented. Afterwards there will be music, activities, and a chance to honor our veterans more in person. The music will continue up until the parade starts.

Following the parade around 3:00 p.m. there were guest speakers and several events to honor our veterans, POW/MIA ceremony, 21 gun salute, playing of taps, and retiring the colors. Immediately following this event there was music and more donation collecting until dusk.

Parade

The parade lined up at 1:00 p.m. at 511 East Main Street. We will line up down the street for close to as far as the eye can see. The parade is started at 2:00 p.m. and lasted until about 3:00 p.m. The route was basically a 1.2 mile straight route down Main Street with one right headed toward the courthouse. In their honor
From Staff Reports

The roar of hundreds of flag-bearing motorcycles greeted a throng of cheering spectators lined along Morristown’s Main Street during the Veterans Day Parade Sunday.

Members of Rolling Thunder, the Patriot Guard riders, the Combat Wounded Veterans riders, and AMVET riders revved their engines all along the parade route to the delight of onlookers, from young to old.

Grand marshalls in class A uniforms riding in a stretch limousine were CW4 Elwood Hastie and Company K Korean War veterans that were deployed from Morristown in the 1950s.

The veterans enjoyed calling their wartime buddies on cell phones to let them know they were riding in style.

Spectators were treated to a moving car show as veterans of several wars, local dignitaries, and Gold Star mother, Mrs. Pat Black from Tellico Plains and Gold Star wife Amanda Thomanson of Jefferson City and her children waved from dozens of vintage cars and trucks, the mint condition exteriors glistening in the afternoon sun.

Tennessee walking horses in patriotic regalia pranced their way up the hill toward the Courthouse in the midst of high school bands, boy scout troops and cub scouts walking with their parents.

The moving mountain of the TNARNG 190th Engineering Company rumbled under the overhead sidewalks as Humvees, 5-ton trucks, a flatbed trailer carrying an M-9 ACE, along with the massive Hemmitt wrecker wowed the crowed.

The parade route ended at the Hamblen County Court House, where an M-9 ACE actually used in Iraq was on display.

The Court House lawn was filled with spectators who walked the parade route to participate in ceremonies honoring veterans.

Present were Congressman David Davis, Morristown City Mayor Sami Barile, Hamblen County Mayor David Purkey, along with keynote speaker John Mitchell.

Moving remarks were given by Hastie and Black, whose son was killed in Fallujah, Iraq.

Parade coordinator Jason Anders was "amazed" at the turnout.

"We put a lot of effort into it," said Anders. "All the motorcycles and the WWII veterans that showed up made me so proud to be a veteran.

"We honestly weren’t anticipating the response. It was wonderful." The parade was sponsored by the American Veterans Association Post #7.
